SIDO

A Second Chance For Pets Whose Owners Have Died

THE STORY OF SIDO

In 1979, a San Francisco woman died, leaving behind a sweet 11 year old dog named Sido. Fearing that no one would properly care for Sido after her death, the woman stipulated in her will that the dog should be euthanised.

The San Francisco SPCA believed that Sido deserved a chance to live, and took up the dog's cause. Ultimately the state legislature passed a law barring the practice of using a will to condemn a healthy pet to death. Sido was saved and spent another five happy years with a loving family.

Sido's legacy, the SIDO Program, provides peace of mind for pet owners and a second chance at love and comfort for pets whose owners die.

We are looking for volunteers to run this program. If you are interested in heading this up, please email volunteer@thesafehaven.ca

or call 604-794-SAFE (7233).

SIDO PROGRAM

Many people don't have a trusted, willing friend or relative to appoint as guardian for their pet. They worry about what will happen to their pet when they pass away. With the SIDO Program, people get peace of mind about the fate of their pets.

When their owner dies, dogs and cats enrolled in SIDO are taken into the Chilliwack Animal Safe Haven Adoption program, after they pass health and behaviour checks. They get exceptional care and attention as the Chilliwack Animal Safe Haven Society works to place them in the best possible home, so they can live out their days in comfort and love.

The SIDO Program is offered to Chilliwack Animal Safe Haven donors at no fee.

*There is a suggested annual donation of $25

HOW TO ENROLL

  • Specify in your will that your pet is to be entrusted into the care of the Chilliwack Animal Safe Haven Society Inc. The language should read, "At the time of my death, I give my pet(s) enrolled in the SIDO Program to the Chilliwack Animal Safe Haven for placement in a loving home."

  • Designate a friend, relative or the executor of your estate to act as interim caretaker and to bring your pet to the Chilliwack Animal Safe Haven.

  • Complete the SIDO Program Pet Biography, providing information about your pet's food preferences, likes and dislikes, habits and special needs. To get a copy of the SIDO Pet Biography form, call 604-794-7233, or download a PDF file. The information will help the Chilliwack Animal Safe Haven match your pet with the best possible new home.

  • Send a copy of the Pet Biography to the Chilliwack Animal Safe Haven and keep a copy with your will. You will receive a request for updates each year, so the Chilliwack Animal Safe Haven will always have the latest information about your pet.
